SB1222 - Safeguarding American Veteran Empowerment Act; created, prohibited practices, penalties.
The JLC and VFW oppose SB 1222. This is a bad bill because it allows Claim Sharks to legally operate in Virginia and to charge in perpetuity for any increase in benefits a veteran may receive, even if they had no part in assisting the veteran to obtain that increase. These claim sharks are not accredited with the Veterans Administration. If they were, they could not legally charge a veteran to file for benefits. Again, please oppose SB 1222. Respectfully, Joanne Smith
We strongly oppose SB 1211 as written and are disappointed members of the Senate have endorsed Claim Sharks. We hope our supporters in the House will not do the same. The attitude of “we can’t stop the Claim Sharks so why not just limit them” is an abdication of responsibility. We don’t “limit” drug dealers we stop them. We don’t “limit” thieves we stop them. We shouldn’t “limit” Claim Sharks…we should stop them! Only allowing Claim Sharks to steal FIVE months of benefits from veterans is five months too many. If this bill passes a veteran who receives a 100% rating from VA would owe the Claim Sharks $19,155 for roughly an hours’ worth of work. If you can tell me any other profession that charges nearly twenty thousand dollars an hour for their work, then I’d like to go work there. These Claim Sharks do not charge reasonable fees. They exploit veterans and endorsing this bill is endorsing the exploitation of veterans. Don’t let the slick lobbyists from out of state continue to exploit and steal money from veterans. Please oppose this bill and do not feed the sharks.
Please pass this bill
I oppse this bill. I am a Navy Veteran w/ 24 years of service. It is completely wrong for the lawyers to get a great portion of my money or any other Veteran for getting what is owed to us for our service to Our Country. It is highway robbery to approve this bill. The Senate should be ashamed of themselves for even allowing this bill to be presented. They should work in and for our interest and not the other way around.
As a veteran I am against SB1222. It is not fare to veterans when they have to give a chunk of their money to lawyers. When there are areas like VFW the VA that can do this job for free. This only allows for lawyers to get rich off of veterans, hard work and their disability.

This bill does not stop claim sharks, that prey on our Veterans. We as Veterans, put our lives on the line, and we put our body, mind, and sprit through a lot of Trauma. For these people to prey on money that is warranted to them, is just plain unjust. I ask that this Bill, gets rejected to support the Veterans who put their life on the line for each of you.
