We have certain freedoms and rights in America that are protected under the Bill of Rights. This includes the 2nd amendment, the right to bear arms. Yet it is under attack by politicians who think they have a right to tell citizens what they can and cannot own. Everyday inch by inch politicians try to chip away at our rights. They try to convince us to compromise and work with them.... But a few months later they do the same thing over again even after we already compromised. They just keep trying to destroy this right and diminish our freedoms because they get scared and feel emotional. Our rights are not based on emotions. No more compromise!! Not one more inch of our rights to be given up. No more gun control, Enough is enough.

As a survivor of gun violence, I support every Bill before this Committee. The Bills do not violate the 2nd Amendment and are desperately needed to prevent further/future tragedies. This nation’s unhealthy obsession with firearms has led to more guns in the hands of the wrong people. These Bills will aid in preventing senseless violence from recurring. Thank you.

SB909 - Firearms; transfers to another person from a prohibited person.

The League of Women Voters of Virginia supports SB 909. When the owner of firearms is subject to protective orders and is convicted of domestic violence, clarifying where and to whom the firearms can be transferred, victims of domestic violence are safer. Too many victims and innocent children die by gunshot from their abuser who have been ordered to give up their gun. Not only does this technical fix save lives, it makes it easier for those at the local level to enforce this law. We support keeping firearms out of an abuser’s place of residence and requiring the clerk of the court to be notified about the details of the transfer.

When critical gun safety legislation comes before you, please move it forward to the Senate floor for a vote. Both SB 1139 and SB 1192 can save lives without infringing on Second Amendment rights. We need to take steps to protect children in schools, at parties attending concert and movie venues, young adults attending college and going to work, everyone in places of worship, in shopping malls, driving down the street. Polls show over and over that gun owners agree with sensible gun law reform. The NRA is a loud, wealth, minority that should never come before your concern for the welfare of the citizens of our Commonwealth.

While I know that I am not a citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I urge the passage of this bill. For the sake of your citizens and the people you represent, please, please pass this bill. I know that all of you work hard for your constituents, and that all of no matter which party get your fair share of criticism. But please see this issue in this way you and the people of the Commonwealth have everything to gain if the bill passed and nothing to lose if you don’t. It’s not like all guns are being banned handguns and others will still be allowed, but I don’t see the necessity in needing an automatic-style assault weapon, in the case of defense which is what the 2nd Amendment exists for, a handgun should suffice. Please, please pass this bill.
