SB 726 is an important step towards strengthening our farms and insuring consistent supplies of healthy food for our communities. Quality beef is raised on 22,000 Virginia farms. The pandemic fully exposed issues and vulnerabilities associated with the meat industry-- that still exist today. 80% of the beef in the US is processed by 4 companies. The ability to process and supply beef to Virginia consumers is vitally important at all times --but especially during periods of uncertainty like the recent pandemic. Virginia needs more regional processing plants so farmers can supply local beef and other meats to our citizens. Currently we have tremendous demand but producers wait 6 months before processing can occur. Virginia does not have the capacity to meet demand. Developing a plan with support is a win-win for rural Virginia and for all of our citizens seeking high quality, locally raised beef. This is the first time we have had everyone working together for a coordinated plan and that is quite noteworthy. Please support SB 726 and sustainable food production in Virginia Jim Riddell Virginia Cattlemen's Association
