Thank you for taking the time to listen to my statement, my name is Angel Cook.
I would like to take the time to shed light on the importance of mothers first milk.
Here are the facts….. colostrum, "liquid gold" is packed with concentrated nutrients and antibodies that are vital for a newborn's survival and development. Colostrum provides essential immune factors that help protect the baby from infections during those critical early days when their own immune system is still immature. It's also a natural laxative, helping to clear meconium (the baby's first stool), which can reduce the risk of jaundice. Furthermore, colostrum is easily digestible and contains growth factors that promote the development of the baby's immature gut, setting the stage for a healthy digestive system. This initial feeding is a powerful biological initiation, establishing a foundation for lifelong health.
These facts do not change JUST because a mother is incarcerated.
I would also like to take the time to emphasis the importance of having access to breastpumps for any and EVERY mother.
When mothers in jail have access to electric breast pumps and other essential items, it's not just about their well-being, but critically about the health and development of their babies. Human milk is uniquely tailored to an infant's nutritional needs, providing antibodies that are crucial for building a strong immune system and protecting against infections. For babies separated from their mothers due to incarceration, continued breastfeeding, facilitated by electric breast pumps, can help maintain that vital connection and ensure the infant receives these life-sustaining nutrients. This access also supports the mother's physical recovery postpartum and can reduce the risk of certain health complications for both mother and child. Ensuring these necessities are available is a direct investment in the infant's immediate health and their long-term developmental trajectory.
To deprive any child from the milk of their mother, would be inhumane.
Thank you.
