Public Comments for: SB270 - Presidential primaries; ranked choice voting, effective clause.
I strongly urge the committee to vote against HB658 as it weakens our democratic process in such a way that one party could potentially rule in our state. It forces individuals to vote for all candidates, including those they may oppose. As a voter in the state of Virginia I do not agree with this, please vote against this.
- Ranked choice voting weakens the democratic process by opening the door for one party rule in a state. - Reproductive freedom is a euphemism for abortion access and the fact that the term is being used proves that it is a scandal. An individual does not have the right to kill a person they find inconvenient. To enshrine this as a constitutionally protected right would be to invite the continued judgment of God upon our state. Magistrates have the duty to restrain evil not establish it in law. - Marriage is pre-political and it is the duty of any sane society to honor and protect it. It is a permanent covenant between a man and a woman to establish a family (God willing) which in turn builds healthy communities. To merely reduce it to some kind of relationship between any two individuals is a detriment to our society and an offense against God. We’ve already seen the devastation wrought by divorce, adultery, and sodomy by judicial decree and statute. Why make it even more ingrained in our legal system?
I oppose all efforts to increase or secure the right to the direct and intentional killing of humans by private persons as in the case of abortion. I oppose any and all efforts to allow marriage between persons other than one man and one woman who have not previously been married unless the other person in that previous marriage is deceased. I oppose the use of ranked choice voting as contrary to our legal tradition, excessively complicated and likely to lead to delays in determining election winners.
Given the ability for anyone to vote in either of the R or D primaries, having ranking choice voting is allowing a significant "loophole in the process" for the primary to be sabotaged by the opposing party or individuals that are not truly representing that party. Rank choice selection is best done in the convention setting, and is a very bad idea for expanding to the general public, as it will basically increase overall frustration with the entire election process when nobodies first choice is selected to run or hold an elected office.
With regard to HJ1 and HJ9, ammending the constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia to enshrine these current ideological positions prohibits the state from representing the choice of it's citizens, should a majority, now or in the future, oppose such issues. Please do not support the suppression of future democratic process. With regard to SB270, ranked choice voting is a poor organization system for voting. Please oppose it.
