The stress placed on students and schools in Virginia related to the Standards of Learning is absurd. We are not providing adequate opportunities for success. We are placing measures that are entirely too restrictive in measuring students’ and schools’ success. Not every student’s test taking abilities are an accurate measure of what they have learned. We have repeatedly learned this across the United States. Let’s pass smart policies that take past research into account. The current policies for implementation of SOL scores are not the best way possible. We need to establish greater flexibility and allowing the expedited retake to be counted as passing is one appropriate way to do so.
