We are FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 422: The Mech Tech Dragons in Richmond City. Our team was founded in 1999 by a state grant to create FRC teams in Virginia and we have now grown to 84 members. Students on our team learn a large variety of skills ranging from technical knowledge, teamwork, public relations, interview skills, and more. STEM+C Competition Teams are a fun way for students to gain experience these subjects starting from an early age. Our school is very lucky to have a STEM+C outlet that supports 10% of the student body but many others are not this fortunate. The initial costs of starting competition teams are most difficult to overcome since these students do not have resources or the experience to fundraise. This makes SB5 an enabler for equity of STEM+C education access. We strongly support giving students in Virginia access to STEM+C competition teams so they can experience the joy and growth we have gained from robotics.

Greetings from Team 422: Mech Tech Dragons! For over 20 years, our team has excelled in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) world, even competing in the World Championships and we are from Richmond, VA. Each year we embark on a collective journey—adjusting to the challenges of building and programming robots, creating exciting outreach events, and fostering partnerships with local organizations to spread the magic of STEM in our communities there. The importance of STEM in shaping the future cannot be overstated by anyone on our team or the impact we have had. It has the transformative power to impact our world in ways we haven’t yet realized. Knowing this, we firmly believe that providing STEM opportunities is not just important; It is an important resource for educating future generations about a wide range of scientific, technical, engineering and mathematical fields. While we appreciate the opportunities afforded us in Group 422, we recognize that not all students in Virginia have the same opportunities and opportunities to participate in such enriching experiences. Enter SB5, the STEM+C Competitive Team grant program and fund, set to be a beacon of hope for those underserved schools in Virginia, where 60% or more of students qualify for free or reduced lunch programs —a mission we do support. SB5 stands as a catalyst—helping to build and sustain teams in schools is promising where access to STEM is not just an extracurricular luxury but a necessity which really changes. Imagine the countless students whose lives can be touched, whose understanding of STEM can be deepened, and who can unleash their potential through the opportunities this bill will provide. Imagine the difference we could make in their communities. At Team 422, we passionately endorse SB5. We stand firmly behind this bill that envisions a future where every Virginia student, regardless of their background, has unfettered and unrestricted access to the transformative power of STEM through initiatives like FRC. We wish to champion a brighter, more equitable future for all Virginia students.

Last Name: Suribhotla Organization: FIRST Team 1086: Blue Cheese Robotics Locality: Glen Allen

We are FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1086 Blue Cheese from Henrico, VA. Over the past 21 years, our team grew to 100+ members who work together to build and program a robot that weighs up to 120 pounds, design social media and publicity materials, and collaborate with local organizations to share STEM with our community. STEM greatly impacts future generations and can influence the world in ways we have never seen. STEM opportunities are crucial to educating future generations about STEM and its many facets. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM jobs will grow at more than double the rate of the US job market over the next decade. STEM+C competition teams are the best way to create a strong, educated STEM workforce to fill those jobs and continue to grow the Virginia economy. While our school is grateful for the opportunity to have a robotics team, not all students across Virginia have the same accessibility and opportunity to participate. SB5 (STEM+C Competition Team Grant Program and Fund; established and created) will provide grants to create and support teams in underserved schools in Virginia, where 60% or more of students qualify for free or reduced lunch programs. SB5 could help countless students learn about STEM and improve in immeasurable ways. We strongly support this bill to give every Virginia student access to amazing opportunities like robotics.
